The following brief biographies have been taken from another site and edited slightly for grammar.
Bhai Balbir Singh Khera (Calgary)
Bhai Balbir Singh Khera was known by the nickname ‘Babbi’. His village in Punjab was Shahkot-Lesriwala in Jalandhar district. He came to Canada at a young age and went to High School in Calgary although he had also lived in Vancouver.
Bhai Sahib was renowned as a tough person. He was known as a person not to get on the wrong side of. Following the holocaust of the Sikhs in the Indian Government’s Operation Bluestar, Bhai Sahib transformed from clean shaven to Amritdhari Gursikh. Incensed by the treatment of his Quam, Bhai Sahib eventually joined what became the International Sikh Youth Federation (I.S.Y.F). In the mid-1980s he disappeared to Pakistan and it was a few years later, family members learned that he had become shaheed.
During Bhai Sahib’s time in Pakistan, he sent back pictures of himself posing with weapons. He became shaheed at the adda of Jaddi and Jadla villages near Nawashahr either in 1988 or 1987 by Punjab Police. His body was never returned to the family despite many tries by the family. Punjab Police still say it was an 'encounter'. What had actually happened was that he was tortured by the Punjab Police. The Kabbadi Tournament in Calgary is held in his honour each year. The langar hall at the main Gurudwara in Calgary has many pictures of Bhai Balbir Singh.
Bhai Bhupinder Singh Kooner (Williams Lake, British Columbia)
Bhai Bhupinder Singh Kooner was the youngest member in his family and fondly known by his friends and family by the nick name ‘Pinda’. His village was Fattupur in Jalandhar district. The atrocities committed by the Indian Government during Operation Bluestar in 1984, awoken the sleeping conscience in Bhai Sahib’s mind following which he became amritdhari. Bhai Bhupinder Singh left his family to join his brothers in arms. After travelling to Pakistan, Bhai Sahib resurfaced in India as a kharkoo. His group targeted in killing sprees specifically those who were anti-Sikh or overly supported of the Indian Government and their policies against the Sikh faith.
On one occasion, Bhai Bhupinder Singh and his group went to kill a notorious Indian Government official and his family. They killed the family but the son of that family managed to escape and hid away from the kharkoos. Later, this boy was the one that identified to police the people that had killed his entire family in front of him.
Most of these kharkoos used to keep their money and belongings with specific people in specific locations. The person who Bhai Bhupinder Singh had trusted with his money and other belongings had betrayed his trust and informed the Police as to his whereabouts. On one fateful occasion, Bhai Sahib was taking a bath in a tube well challa when the lapdogs of the Indian Government came to get him. He had nowhere to go. Bhai Bhupinder Singh was also killed in an 'encounter' following torture by the Punjab Police. His body was never returned despite many attempts by family members.
