Martyrdom of a Martyr is the breath of nations. Martyrdom plays the role of giving life to the dead nations and keeps the desire for freedom alive. But martyrdom comes only in the destiny of those with good fate. An ordinary man first takes birth, lives for some time and then dies. But a martyr decides the fate of his own death; and to keep his nation alive, he rejects living a comfortable life and accepts the death rope gladly. A martyrdom which is achieved without any wish for personal gain is truly a great act. But only rare brave warriors are able to accept martyrdom. Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar of the Sikh militancy movement was amongst the queue of those rare brave warriors.
Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar was one of the leaders of leading Sikh freedom fighting groups. For the sake of rising spirits of the Khalsa Panth, Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar attained martyrdom during Police tortures on August 20, 1987 at the village of Verowal.
Bhai Sahib spent the 32 years of his short life for the cause of Sikh nation. Just how the sleep of Brahmin leaders was disrupted with merely the name of martyr Bhai Mathra Singh, the Brahmin leadership at that time was afraid of Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar’s name.
Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar was born in the family of Father Makhan Singh and Mother Niranjan Kaur in village Birring of district Amritsar. Bhai Sahib’s family had four sons – Bhai Joga Singh, Bhai Santokh Singh, Bhai Anokh Singh and Bhai Hardeep Singh. All the members of his family were Amritthari Gursikhs.
Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar was an owner of peaceful-saintly thinking ever since his birth. While doing work at his house he would be reading Gurbani. Not only was he a highly enlightened Gursikh, he was also a college graduate. After graduating, he started working as an Inspector in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. According to his fellow workers, Bhai Anokh Singh did his work with diligence and honesty; he also instigated his near ones to perform their duties with integrity. He believed that money from Gurdwaras was like poison for Gursikhs, and that it should only be used for the betterment and service of humanity.
Bhai Sulakhan Singh Babbar Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar and Bhai Balwinder Singh VirhingWhile working as an inspector, Bhai Anokh Singh met Bhai Fauja Singh. Because of Bhai Fauja Singh’s inspirational character, Bhai Anokh Singh became a follower of the Gurmukh lifestyle. He started taking gatka lessons at Bhai Fauja Singh Ji’s farmhouse. Amongst the Singhs there, he had immense respect for Bhai Sulakhan Singh.
Before going underground, Bhai Surinder Singh Nagoke organized an Akhand Path at his house and Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar listened to the whole Akhand Path continuously in one sitting.
The bloody night of April 13, 1978 Vaisakhi shook Bhai Anokh Singh and his friends from deep inside. The martyrdom of Bhai Fauja Singh and other Singhs at the 1978 massacre left a deep effect on the saint minded Bhai Anokh Singh. After this massacre, Bhai Anokh Singh’s name came out when the Nirankaris were punished in Patti and Tarn Taran.
Bhai Anokh Singh’s highest quality was that he never misused Panthic funds. Sister of Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sakhera was married to Bhai Santokh Singh, Bhai Anokh Singh’s brother. Satguru Ji blessed Bhai Santokh Singh’s home with a son. When Bhai Anokh Singh went there to see his newly born nephew, he took 2 rupees out of his pocket and gave them to him. Seeing that, Bhai Anokh Singh’s sister-in-law, just like other village women, said to Bhai Sahib, “Brother Anokh Singh, being such an eminent warrior, how could you give only two rupees to your newly born nephew?”
Bhai Anokh Singh replied to his sister-in-law by saying, “Bhabhi Ji, even the two rupees that I gave seemed extra to me as these two rupees belong to the Panth, and I don’t want my family to use even a single penny of that money.”
After the first time when Dehli police arrested Bhai Anokh Singh, Bhai Santokh Singh went to meet him at the time he was being presented in the court. Bhai Anokh Singh called his brother and told him that if the police martyr him, his family should not sell his blood. This was not it, Bhai Anokh Singh often used to go to his house to get the tenth portion of the farming income but his brothers would request him to not take any money because of the bad financial times at their house but Bhai Anokh Singh would tell them, “Give the tenth portion of your earnings as it belongs to the Guru, and you have no right over it.”
Bhai Anokh Singh had an immense longing for dying for Panthic causes. He often used to say that when he is being martyred and the oppressors are cutting him limb by limb, he should not even scream in pain for once. It is said that when Bhai Anokh Singh’s friends got him freed from jail, Bhai Sahib said, “I finally came close to being martyred but had to run away; this exam was given to me, but I failed…” He would often say this to his father Makhan Singh too – “When there are any Governmental blockades, you should go too. Who knows you might get shot and attain martyrdom, which can only be attained with great fortune.”
Depending on the time, Shaheed Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar would kill oppressors with these fake names and get to his destination; these names were like, “Anokh Singh alias Jagdish Singh Kohli, alias Inspector, and alias Karan Singh, ect. Bhai Anokh Singh had a very good shot and he was great at changing his appearance.
According to the police, Bhai Sahib was the prime suspect for involvement in many cases. As in the cases of murders in Tarn Taran, attack on Ludhiana’s vice-Superintendent of Police, and Bhai Sahib’s name even linked with the Delhi bomb blasts.
One time on February 12, 1987, Bhai Sahib was brought to the district court of Ludhiana. At that time, Bhai Sahib’s fellow freedom fighters opened fire and killed two Police officers. When these two officers fell on the ground, Bhai Anokh Singh’s friends freed him from the Police and ran away in a Fiat car. Even after that, Bhai Sahib continued punishing enemies while being underground. At that time, the Indian Government had put the price of one-lakh rupees on Bhai Sahib’s head.

At the end, the Jalandhar police arrested the brave warrior who always sang the songs of death. The tyrant Police officers took Bhai Sahib to the Verowal Police station (district Amritsar) where he was tortured severely. Bhai Anokh Singh’s back was broken and his eyes were taken out with the bayonet of a rifle, as part of his torture. Bhai Sahib’s tongue was incised while he was doing simran. Sharpened iron rods were forced down Bhai Sahib’s legs from his feet and pushed through the knees. One hot iron rod was also forced down his skull. Nevertheless, this brave son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji did ardas for rising spirits. One Muslim leader of that time who was known for his tyrant ways of giving punishments became shocked when he witnessed Bhai Sahib staying calm and doing simran with his every breath until his death. At last, Bhai Sahib’s severely wounded body was shot inside the Verowal police station, but the soul of this martyr had already achieved liberation.
Martyrdom of Bhai Anokh Singh proved that even now the souls of the martyr Sikhs of 16th century stroll in the Sikh nation. (It should be remembered that after Bhai Sahib’s martyrdom, his father - Bhai Makhan Singh was given many tortures and martyred as well.)
The Sikh Nation bows to the deeds of Shaheed Bhai Anokh Singh Babbar and will stay committed for the aims which have been decided by the forefathers. How many such brave warriors can the Brahmin leadership eliminate? – These are the unending caravans.
