According to prison authorities, Phoola was eating his lunch in cell no 30, when the two Singhs attacked him. They doused him with petrol, taken out from a generator, and set him ablaze.
Phoola was taken to the cities Civil Hospital, then due to lack of facilities, transferred to Guru Nanak Dev hospital, Majitha road, Amritsar. After receiving treatment here, Phoola was referred to PGI Chandigarh where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Doctors say Phoola is in a critical state having suffered 80% burns. Phoola's entire body from the face down to his knees has been badly burned. It is not yet known if he will live.
Navtej Singh "Gaggu" of Batala, district Gurdaspur & Harchand Singh of Bhikiwind, district Tarn Taran who were lodged in barrack number 9 were named by Phoola, as his attackers.
Note: Phoola is responsible for a large number of rapes, looting and murder of innocent Sikh youth and families of Jujharoo Singhs. Phoola is currently being tried with cases registered against him, much due to the hard work of Colonel G.S. Sandhu.
Phoola was used by the Punjab police officials as an informer in Punjab during the period of 1981-95 and used to have armed private bodyguards of fellow "Nihangs" besides police personnel for his security.
